Why Change Is Important

Change while not always easy and wanted can be a cleansing, cathartic and ultimately fulfilling process.

When I was 20, I was diagnosed with cancer. Needless to say it was one of the most terrifying and the most humiliating times a person can experience. At that moment in my life I was getting married and planning on a future family, when out of the blue - life dramatically changed.

For several years I was NOT a pleasant person to be around. I was angry because I felt ugly and beaten down by the world. But I was really lucky. Thanks to a dear friend, I was forced to face my situation and reevaluate my life and the cards that I had been dealt.

My "angel of change" took me to the "Relay For Life", sponsored by the American Cancer Society. That event made me realize that sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you have to make a quick decision whether to swing or duck. I chose to swing as hard as I could.

I started to revaluate who I was. I began to navigate my way through life with a new purpose through uncharted territory. I didn´t know where I was going, but I knew I was given a second chance at life and I HAD to make a difference.

This month I want you to know YOU are never to old to make a difference and to pursue change if that is what you want. I am reading a great book called the First 30 Days, written by Ariane de Bonvoisin. The author writes about nine principles of change-how to embrace it, move through it, and successfully navigate the twists and turns of life.

Sometimes that is challenging, especially as we grow older. We seem to get in a rut, hit a wall and sometimes - just coast. When that happens it can make us become cantankerous - much like I was several years ago.

I say, you are at such a beautiful time in your life. I challenge each of you to become a change optimist and help others through the process. You have the power to make a difference, whether big or small amongst your friends and within your community. By seeing the positive in any life change, it will be easier to handle when you face it in the future.

John F Kennedy stated, "Change is the law of life."

I am so grateful for my friend, Vicki. She took the power within herself and helped me embrace change. I am now honored to be part of the "survivors" club. I no longer hide the pain of yesterday, I embrace it and I want you to embrace it too.
